Wèilái
In View
During my recent visit to Shanghai, China, I explored The Bund district, dedicating time to capturing its captivating essence through photography. This district is characterised by two distinct riverside banks that contrast sharply in architectural style. On the east bank, Neoclassical and Baroque influences dominate. On the west bank, futuristic architecture rises, including the Oriental Pearl Tower that comes alive at night, reminiscent of the visually stunning scenes in Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner.
In Reflection
The concept of the future requires careful thought. It remains uncertain and can evoke hope, anticipation, and excitement, but also stress, anxiety, and pressure. We constantly strive toward a future that surpasses our current circumstances, driven by the desire for improvement. While this mindset can propel us toward growth, it can also harm our well being. By fixating solely on what lies ahead, we neglect the present moment and fail to appreciate our current situation.
Perhaps if we pause to acknowledge where we are and express gratitude for the journey we have already undertaken, the need to relentlessly push forward diminishes. The future will always be ahead of us, but the pace at which we pursue it ultimately determines our level of contentment.
In My Life
Standing between the old and new banks of Shanghai, I felt the tension between past and future. The skyline spoke of progress, yet it also reminded me of the importance of gratitude for the present. I realised that anticipation without appreciation leaves us restless, always chasing what is next. Wèilái continues to remind me that balance is found in honouring both where I stand and where I am headed.
Wèilái is the traditional Chinese word for the future.
